Idols Of The Modern-Day Heart

What is one of the first things people do when they have extra time on their hands? The general population of people-especially young people-tend to go onto the internet. Whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube.

I had some time on my hands (mostly because I can’t sleep) and was watching some of the “trending” videos that popped up. As I’m watching these videos, I thought to myself “Why on earth do people treat these people like gods? Why do we idolize these people who just promote corruption and immorality?”

1 Corinthians 8:6 says “But we know that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we live for him. And there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom God made everything and through whom we have been given life.” (NLT)

Romans 12:2 states “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (NLT)

Here’s what I have been thinking for the last few days. If we as Christians are called to a higher standard, then why do we act much the same as everyone else? Now, I’m not saying that we should live like the Amish, but I am saying that we should pay more mind to what we are feeding our minds and spirits. Luke 6:45 “…for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (ESV) If this is the case, and we KNOW it, then why do we still fill our hearts with filth?

Why do young christian girls think it’s okay to go and scream and cry and make a scene over a boy? Why are we not teaching our young women that there is a different-better-way. I learned this at around age 14 or 15. I realized that I was acting just like the rest of the girls, and you know what was the real ringer? I realized I was acting that way just because I wanted to FIT IN!!!  Why, oh why, do we do stuff just to fit in when we were called to STAND OUT! to be the LIGHT to the world. How can we be light if we’re acting like darkness? How can light shine from us if we fill ourselves with darkness?

Now, I’m no acceptation to this. I, myself, am guilty for filling my mind with stuff that I shouldn’t. But, I thank Jesus that he is showing me this stuff so, with his help, I can overcome the darkness and be a true light!!!

To close this, let me leave you with one last thought: We as Christians desire revival. So, let the revival begin in our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” As the saying goes “What goes in, must come out.”
