A few weeks ago I went out into the dark to put my family’s dog into the barn for the night. As I was walking back towards the light of the house, I thought to myself, “It’s interesting that you see more when you walk towards the light than you do when you walk away from it,”
Just at that moment, Psalm 119:105 came into my mind;
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”
When we walk toward the light, it illuminates everything in our path, hence why we can see more. When we walk away from the light, we see less because the darkness consumes everything in its path.
This is the very thing that God is trying to tell us in his word.
His word is the light that illuminates our path so that we can walk the path before us without stumbling. Without the light of his word, we’re destined to wander aimlessly in the dark stumbling over every single little bump in the road.
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” John 8:12
I don’t know about you, but there have been many times in my life where I’ve feel like I just can’t cope with what is going on around me. It felt like every little thing that came at me came out of nowhere and like I was constantly falling over the edge of cliffs that I didn’t even see were there…
Looking back, I realize that these times where I felt completely lost and in the dark were the times that I wasn’t reading God’s word or spending time in his presence.
When we walk away from the light, we end up in the darkness stumbling and muddling through what could be an easy journey if we had The Light guiding our steps.
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,and the Word was God…The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” John 1:1, 4-5
Light can overcome the darkness, but the darkness can never overcome the light, how amazing is that?
In fact, when you are living your life in conjunction with God and his word, not only are you living in the light, but the Bible says that you are the light!
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15
To be the light, you must be in the light. To be in the light, you must be walking towards the light, which means shifting your body and your gaze to face the light.
Do you feel like you’re stumbling through the darkness, unable to see the things that are in your path?
Take a moment and ask yourself, “Am I walking towards the light? Am I facing the light? Or, am I stumbling over every little thing because I’m walking a path where my back is to the light?”
If you really, seriously ask yourself these questions, I believe those answers will open your eyes to why you may be feeling the way you are.
Yes, even us Christians can get side-swiped by something; an unexpected diagnosis, an unexpected job loss or financial issue. But, when we are walking in the Light of God and his word, we don’t have to feel like we were just sucker punched my a huge boulder that came out of nowhere to roll over us.
When we’re walking in God’s light and in have his word lighting our way, we get to have the immeasurable peace that comes along with that!
Maybe you’re reading this and you’ve never experienced that light I’m talking about. Maybe you’re thinking “All I’ve ever felt was like I’m constantly stumbling through the darkness and continually falling and everything is just chaotic and fear consumes my every breath because I don’t know what’s coming with the next step I take…”
Maybe you’re sitting there thinking “I would love to experience this light and this ‘immeasurable peace’ that you’re talking about… How can I get that?”
Well, All you have to do is ask Jesus to come into your life and light up the darkness. Tell him that you’re sorry for walking away from the light and forgiveness that he offers, and that you’d like to walk towards his light and experience the peace that he gives.
And, as I said earlier, walking towards the light means shifting your body and your gaze to face the light.
The best way to shift your gaze towards him so that you’re walking in his light is to read his word–The Bible.
